Northern Utah Fishing Report | September 29 – October 5, 2025
Fall has officially arrived in Northern Utah, and anglers are being rewarded with some of the best fishing conditions of the year. Cooler water temps, changing leaves, and active fish make this a great time to get out and explore local rivers and reservoirs.
Logan River
The Logan River continues to shine this fall with strong trout activity throughout the canyon. Water clarity is excellent, and flows are ideal for wading.
Flows & Conditions: Clear and cool, with perfect visibility.
What’s Working: Small mayfly and caddis patterns are effective throughout the day, especially size 18–20 dries. Nymphing with midges, hare’s ears, and small perdigons continues to produce steady numbers.
Best Times: Late morning through early evening.
Species: Brown trout and rainbow trout.
Pro Tip: Use lighter tippet and natural drifts — the water is clear, and fish are keyed in on subtle presentations.
Ogden River (South Fork)
The Ogden River is fishing well as water levels stabilize and trout feed more aggressively. With cooler temps and steady hatches, this week should bring consistent action.
Flows & Conditions: Clear and cold, with strong visibility in the canyon.
What’s Working: Nymph rigs with zebra midges, pheasant tails, and small soft hackles have been productive. Look for surface activity in the afternoons with blue-winged olives on overcast days.
Best Times: Mid-morning through late afternoon.
Species: Brown trout and rainbow trout.
Shop Tip: A two-fly nymph setup under a small indicator has been the most consistent producer for both numbers and size.
Hyrum Reservoir
Hyrum is offering some solid mixed-bag fishing right now. Cooler surface temps have both trout and warmwater species feeding more actively near the shallows.
Water Conditions: Slightly stained with surface temps in the low 60s.
What’s Working: Trolling small spoons and crankbaits for trout has been reliable. Bass anglers are finding success along rocky points with spinnerbaits and Texas rigs.
Best Times: Early morning and dusk.
Species: Rainbow trout, bass, and perch.
Pro Tip: This is a great time to fish from shore — cooler water has brought fish closer in, especially in the evenings.
East Canyon Reservoir
East Canyon continues to provide great early-fall fishing, especially for rainbows and smallmouth bass. The lake is cooling off fast, and fish are moving into shallower zones.
Water Conditions: Clear with surface temps in the low 60s.
What’s Working: Try trolling with wedding rings and worms for trout, or casting small crankbaits near the dam and coves. Bass anglers are doing well with tubes and Ned rigs near rocky structure.
Best Times: Morning hours and late afternoon.
Species: Rainbow trout, brown trout, and smallmouth bass.
Pro Tip: Focus on wind-blown shores — baitfish are being pushed in, and the trout are following close behind.
Final Thoughts
Northern Utah is in full fall fishing mode! The rivers are low, clear, and loaded with feeding trout, while reservoirs like Hyrum and East Canyon are offering great mixed-species action. With crisp mornings and calm afternoons, this is prime time to be on the water.
