Northern Utah Fishing Report | October 20–26, 2025
Late October brings some of the best fishing of the year across Northern Utah. The colors are fading, the air is crisp, and the fish are feeding hard before winter sets in. River trout are aggressive, and lake fishing is steady and consistent throughout the week.
Strawberry Reservoir
Strawberry is producing excellent late-fall action as trout cruise shallow water and shoreline structure. Cooler temps have pushed fish close, making this a great week for both shore anglers and boaters.
Water Conditions: Clear with surface temps in the low 50s.
What’s Working: Troll with pop gear and worms or cast tube jigs and spoons around the Ladders and Soldier Creek. Fly anglers are finding great success with leeches, balanced patterns, and woolly buggers fished slowly.
Best Times: Early morning and late afternoon.
Species: Cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and kokanee salmon.
Pro Tip: Focus on areas with gentle drop-offs — trout are staging just off the shallows and will follow slow presentations all the way in.
Hyrum Reservoir
Hyrum is an underrated fall hotspot right now. Trout and bass are both active as the water cools, and fishing pressure is light.
Water Conditions: Slightly stained with temps in the mid-50s.
What’s Working: Trout are hitting small spoons, spinners, and worms fished near shore. Bass anglers are picking up fish along rocky points with jigs and crankbaits.
Best Times: Morning hours and the last two hours before sunset.
Species: Rainbow trout, largemouth bass, and perch.
Shop Tip: Bring both spinning and trolling gear — the bite can shift quickly as light and wind change throughout the day.
Weber River
The Weber is at its best right now. Browns are in pre-spawn mode and feeding aggressively, making this one of the most exciting weeks of the year for river anglers.
Flows & Conditions: Clear with moderate flows and cool fall temperatures.
What’s Working: Streamers in olive, white, or black are moving big fish early in the morning. During the day, small baetis, midges, and sow bug patterns under indicators are producing steady action.
Best Times: Early morning and late afternoon.
Species: Brown and rainbow trout.
Pro Tip: Focus on slower seams and pools — aggressive browns are holding in deeper water and ambushing streamers.
Provo River
The Provo is fishing exceptionally well with steady flows and a strong fall hatch cycle. Cooler temps have the browns and rainbows feeding aggressively from morning through evening.
Flows & Conditions: Clear and stable.
What’s Working: Nymphing with small baetis and midges is consistent. Dry-fly anglers should look for BWO hatches on cloudy afternoons. Streamers fished along undercut banks are taking bigger browns.
Best Times: Late morning through sunset.
Species: Brown trout and rainbow trout.
Pro Tip: Fall is the time to swing small streamers — fish are territorial and more likely to strike at larger patterns.
Final Thoughts
Late October fishing across Northern Utah is as good as it gets. The Weber and Provo Rivers are both producing big fall browns, while Strawberry and Hyrum Reservoirs are offering great multi-species action in cool, calm water. It’s prime time before ice starts to form in the high country.
