Utah Fishing Report

December 8–14

Mid-December fishing across Northern Utah is firmly in winter mode. Cold temperatures, short days, and minimal angling pressure define the week. While conditions can be challenging, anglers who focus on slow presentations and fish during the warmest parts of the day are still finding consistent opportunities.

Weber River

Conditions:
Very cold, clear water with winter flows. Ice is present along shaded banks and slower edges, especially during morning hours.

What’s Working:
Deep nymphing continues to be the most productive approach. Small midge and mayfly patterns fished close to the bottom are producing steady results. Streamers can be effective during low-light periods.

Notes:
Target slower runs and deeper pools where trout are conserving energy. Midday into early afternoon has been the best window.

Logan River

Conditions:
Clear, cold water with low winter flows. Snow and ice along the banks make access slick, particularly in shaded areas.

What’s Working:
Small, natural nymphs fished deep remain key. Midge patterns dominate, and fish are feeding selectively. Long leaders and light tippets improve success.

Notes:
This is technical winter fishing. Clean drifts and precise depth control are critical.

Lost Creek Reservoir

Conditions:
Cold water with increasing ice formation along the shoreline. Open water remains in some areas, depending on daily temperatures.

What’s Working:
Trout are holding deeper and responding well to slow jigging and bottom-oriented presentations.

Notes:
This reservoir is transitioning quickly toward ice season. Use caution around thin ice near the edges.

Strawberry Reservoir

Conditions:
Winter conditions are fully setting in. Shore access and open water availability depend heavily on weather and ice development.

What’s Working:
During open-water periods, cutthroat and rainbow trout are cruising shallow flats on calm days. Jigging deeper water has been effective when fish are not active near shore.

Notes:
This may be one of the final open-water opportunities before consistent ice fishing begins. Dress for winter and monitor conditions closely.

Final Thoughts

Mid-December rewards anglers who fish slowly, adjust depth often, and focus on midday warming trends. With low pressure and stable winter patterns, quality fish are still available for those willing to adapt.
