Utah Fishing Report
December 15–21
Late December brings full winter conditions across Northern Utah. Cold water, short daylight hours, and limited fishing pressure are defining the week. Success continues to favor anglers who slow down, fish deep, and focus their efforts during midday warming periods.
Provo River
Conditions:
Clear, cold water with stable winter flows. The Middle Provo remains one of the most consistent winter fisheries in the region.
What’s Working:
Midge-based nymph rigs fished deep have been producing the most consistent results. Fish are feeding selectively, making precise drifts and light tippets essential.
Notes:
Adjust depth frequently and focus on quality presentations. Afternoon fishing has been more productive than early mornings.
Ogden River
Conditions:
Cold, clear water with winter flows in place. Ice is present along shaded banks and slower edges.
What’s Working:
Deep nymphing with small mayfly and midge patterns continues to be effective. Streamers can work during low-light periods or overcast days.
Notes:
Focus on slower runs and deeper pools where trout are conserving energy.
Willard Bay
Conditions:
Very cold water with increasing ice formation along the shoreline. Open water may remain in wind-exposed areas.
What’s Working:
Where open water exists, slow presentations near the bottom have been effective. Fish are holding deeper as winter patterns settle in.
Notes:
Ice conditions can change rapidly. Use caution near the shoreline and monitor conditions closely.
East Canyon Reservoir
Conditions:
Winter conditions are established, with ice forming along edges and in protected areas. Open water availability depends on daily temperatures.
What’s Working:
Trout are responding well to slow jigging techniques near the bottom during open-water periods.
Notes:
This reservoir often transitions quickly to ice fishing. Exercise caution around thin or newly formed ice.
Final Thoughts
Late December fishing is all about patience, safety, and timing. Fish deeper, slow your presentations, and prioritize midday windows when water temperatures are slightly higher.
