Utah Fishing Report
December 1–7
Early December marks the transition from late fall into winter across Northern Utah. Colder water temperatures, short daylight hours, and minimal fishing pressure are shaping conditions on both rivers and reservoirs. Anglers willing to slow down and fish during midday warming periods are still finding success.
Ogden River
Conditions:
Cold, clear water with winter flows in place. Ice is forming along shaded banks and slower edges, particularly during the mornings.
What’s Working:
Deep nymphing remains the most reliable approach. Small midge and mayfly patterns fished tight to the bottom are producing consistent action. Streamers can be effective in low light or slightly stained water.
Notes:
Focus on slower runs and tailouts where fish are conserving energy. Afternoon sessions have been noticeably more productive.
Provo River
Conditions:
Clear, cold water with stable winter flows. The Middle Provo continues to offer reliable winter fishing opportunities.
What’s Working:
Midge-heavy nymph rigs with precise drifts are key. Fish are feeding selectively, so light tippets and natural presentations are essential.
Notes:
This is technical winter fishing. Take your time, adjust depth frequently, and concentrate on quality drifts.
Pineview Reservoir
Conditions:
Water temperatures are very cold, with early ice forming in protected coves and along the shoreline. Open water remains available depending on weather patterns.
What’s Working:
Trout are holding deeper and responding well to slow jigging techniques. Vertical presentations near structure have been effective.
Notes:
Be cautious around thin ice near the edges. Conditions can change quickly with cold snaps.
Mantua Reservoir
Conditions:
Winter conditions are setting in, with increasing ice coverage along the shoreline. Some open water may remain early in the week.
What’s Working:
As ice forms, fish are transitioning into winter patterns. Slow jigging and bottom-oriented presentations have been effective during open-water periods.
Notes:
This reservoir often transitions to ice fishing early. Monitor conditions closely and use caution when approaching any ice.
Final Thoughts
Early December fishing requires patience and adaptability. Focus on midday windows, slow your presentations, and prioritize safety as winter conditions take hold. With light pressure and stable conditions, anglers can still find rewarding opportunities.
