Fishing Report

Mantua is still a good fall option, but DEQ has an algae warning on it as of October 1. Keep the dogs out and stay away from scummy water. Largemouth are still around the weed edges and docks, and bluegill and perch are in the weeds.

Heads up on the regs. The Wildlife Board approved some changes for Mantua. The bluegill limit is dropping from 50 to 15, and any walleye you catch has to be killed because they were illegally put in there. Check the guidebook for when it kicks in. As the weeds die back, fish the outside edges.

Hot Species

Selected by the Anglers Den team

Largemouth Bass

An ambush predator commonly found near vegetation, submerged wood and protected shoreline cover. Largemouth readily strike soft plastics, jigs and reaction baits.

Bluegill

A common panfish found near vegetation, docks and shallow cover. Bluegill readily take small flies, jigs and soft plastics and provide excellent light-tackle fishing.

Yellow Perch

A schooling fish recognized by its yellow body and dark vertical bars. Yellow perch feed around vegetation and bottom structure and readily take small jigs and bait.

Rainbow Trout

A widely stocked and naturally reproducing trout known for aggressive feeding, strong runs and its distinctive pink lateral stripe.

Smallmouth Bass

A hard-fighting warm-water predator commonly found around rocky shorelines, points and drop-offs. Smallmouth readily strike soft plastics, crankbaits and streamers.

Walleye

A low-light predator commonly found near rocky points, drop-offs and deeper structure. Walleye are often targeted with jigs, crankbaits and slowly trolled presentations.
